This is one of my very favorite shade garden combinations. This photo was taken in late fall, just before our last killing frost. The Japanese Painted Ferns emerge with lovely purple and siver shoots, which mellow over the season to this frost green. The Hellebore have a heavy, almost leathery leaf, that contrast nicely with the delicate ferns. The early blooms of the Hellebore are also shades of pink, cream & purple that hang around long enough to play up the emerging fern. Both plants do great in dry to damp shade- love it!
